From bonglai rhizome to a warming muscle balm
A worked example of the method — from documented traditional use to a formulated product, including what we still do not know. This page names a product; it does not sell one.
Everyday muscle soreness after labour or exercise, met across the region with warmed rubs — and a market full of unstandardised preparations.
Malay postpartum tradition applies bonglai and cekur rhizome paste preparations — the param, pilis and tapel recorded in surveys of Malay traditional practitioners [1] — and the warmed rub for tired muscle belongs to the same preparation family.
Zingiber cassumunar (grade B) with Kaempferia galanga (grade C) — a dual-herb pairing that mirrors the traditional preparation.
A 2012 double-blind trial (n=100) of a plai-and-ginger combination gel reported knee-osteoarthritis outcomes comparable to diclofenac gel [2], and a 2016 randomised trial tested plai cream after eccentric exercise [3]. Compound-level work identifies the phenylbutenoids, including compound D, as candidate actives [4].
Standardised extract at a fixed phenylbutenoid marker level in an anhydrous balm base; no camphor above regulated limits, no undeclared additives.
Batch testing for heavy metals and microbial load; patch-test guidance on pack; registration as a traditional product with the relevant authority before sale.
The result is Nuvantara's bonglai and cekur warming balm. Details, ingredients and availability are on the maker's site.
